Braces 103 – Taking care of your braces

Braces are significant personal and financial investment that should be handled with care. Dr. Rice and team have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of patients to help them transform their bite. To make the process as easy as possible, we recommend proactive maintenance by the patient to keep the braces clean and healthy.

Prepare for more detailed brushing and flossing

Oftentimes, we find that patients don’t account for the longer time required to brush and floss teeth with braces. We recommend carving out anywhere between an additional 5-10 minutes per day for the exercise. While that may not seem like much, you’d be surprised at a what a difference a few minutes make.

For proper braces maintenance, be sure to do the following everyday:

  1. Take off the elastics and other removable parts
  2. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean around wires and braces. Brush up and down and take the time to ensure you cover each tooth
  3. Floss at least once a day
  4. Rinse and check your teeth for any particles that you feel may still be trapped in your teeth
  5. Place the removable parts back in as needed
