Teen Treatments

The most common time for active orthodontic treatment is between the ages of 11 and 15, and for good reasons:

  • By this age, most, if not all, of the permanent teeth have erupted and are in place. This allows for easy detection and effective treatment planning for crooked teeth, gaps, bad bites, and other alignment issues. These circumstances rarely correct themselves, so this is when most parents decide to seek orthodontic treatment
  • Because many adolescents undergo orthodontic treatment, negative associations with braces are not present. In fact, so many in this age range have braces that the orthodontic treatment process including custom band selection and fun interaction with the orthodontist’s office gives adolescents something in common
  • Adolescents are growing rapidly, and orthodontists can usually take advantage of these growth spurts to help shape the bite and teeth correctly. In addition, this age group tends to have a high metabolism, which can help shorten overall treatment time and reduce any discomfort of orthodontic treatment
